Tiger Stripes on Gutters and How to Remove Them

By Delta Softwash

If you have ever looked up at your gutters and noticed dark streaks running vertically down the face of them, almost like claw marks, you have seen what we call tiger stripes. They show up on homes all over Mobile and Baldwin County, and they are one of the more stubborn stains a homeowner will deal with, because normal cleaning methods barely touch them.

What Tiger Stripes Actually Are

Tiger stripes form from a combination of oxidation on the aluminum gutter finish, airborne dirt, and tree sap or pollen that gets baked on by the sun. As rain runs down the face of the gutter, it carries this grime with it in thin, uneven streams, leaving those dark vertical lines behind. Over time, UV exposure bonds the staining to the gutter's finish, which is why a quick hose-down or a swipe with a rag does nothing.

Why They Show Up Worse Here

Our climate does not do gutters any favors. Heavy pollen season in spring, constant humidity off Mobile Bay, and frequent rain during storm season all speed up the staining process. Homes tucked under oak and pine trees in Fairhope, Spanish Fort, and the Eastern Shore tend to see tiger stripes develop faster because of sap and organic debris landing directly on the gutters.

Why Scrubbing Doesn't Work

A lot of homeowners try scrubbing tiger stripes off with a brush and household cleaner, and it is exhausting work for very little payoff. Because the staining has bonded to the finish through UV exposure, surface scrubbing only removes the top layer of grime while the actual stripe remains. Some folks resort to pressure washing the gutters directly, which can dent soft aluminum or push water up under the roofline.

The Soft Wash Approach

We treat tiger stripes with a specialized cleaning solution designed to break down oxidation and baked-on residue without high pressure. The solution dwells on the gutter surface long enough to loosen the stain, then rinses away cleanly, restoring the gutter's original finish instead of just knocking off surface dirt. Because there is no scrubbing and no high-pressure blasting, there is no risk of denting the gutter or damaging the paint finish underneath.

Prevention Between Cleanings

  • Trim back overhanging branches that drop sap and debris onto gutters
  • Clean out gutter channels regularly so debris doesn't sit and stain longer
  • Schedule a soft wash of your gutters alongside your regular house wash
  • Address staining early before it has months of UV exposure to set in

Tiger stripes are one of those problems that just get harder to remove the longer they sit, so if you are noticing them starting to form, it is worth taking care of sooner rather than later.
