Is Soft Washing Safe for Plants and Pets?
By Delta Softwash
If you have flower beds along your front porch, a vegetable garden out back, or a dog that treats the yard like home base, it is a fair question to ask before you book a house wash. What is actually in that solution, and is it going to hurt anything you care about? Here is the honest, straightforward answer.
What's Actually in a Soft Wash Solution
Soft washing uses a low-pressure application of a cleaning solution, typically a mix of water, a diluted sodium hypochlorite based cleaner similar to what is in household bleach, and a surfactant that helps the solution cling to vertical surfaces so it has time to work. The concentration used on a house wash is much lower than what people assume, and it is applied at low pressure specifically so it can be controlled and rinsed properly.
Why the Concentration Matters
A diluted, professionally mixed solution breaks down organic growth like algae and mildew effectively while minimizing risk to surrounding plants when it is applied and rinsed correctly. This is very different from someone spraying full-strength bleach straight from the house without any dilution or rinse plan, which is where plant damage actually comes from in DIY situations.
How We Protect Landscaping During a Wash
- Pre-wetting plants, shrubs, and grass around the work area before application
- Using tarps or covers on especially delicate plants when needed
- Applying solution directly to the house or hard surface, not broadcasting it over landscaping
- Thoroughly rinsing plants and greenery immediately after the wash is complete
- Adjusting technique for sensitive plants common in coastal Alabama landscaping
This combination of pre-wetting and post-rinsing dilutes any solution that lands on plants quickly, which is the single biggest factor in preventing plant stress or damage. We have washed hundreds of homes across Mobile, Fairhope, and Spanish Fort with mature landscaping still looking healthy well after the job is done.
What to Tell Us Ahead of Time
If you have a particularly sensitive garden, newly planted shrubs, or plants you are especially attached to, let us know before we start. We are happy to give those areas extra attention or take additional precautions.
What About Pets?
Once a soft wash solution has been properly rinsed and the surfaces are dry, they are safe for pets to be around. During the actual wash, we recommend keeping pets indoors or in a separate part of the yard, simply because of the hoses, equipment, and general activity, not because of any lingering chemical risk. The same goes for kids playing in the yard during the appointment.
A Note on DIY Pressure Washing
A lot of the plant damage people associate with house washing actually comes from DIY attempts using full-strength cleaners without proper dilution, pre-wetting, or rinsing. That is where things go wrong. A professional soft wash follows a process specifically designed to avoid that outcome.
